Awards
Awards are a significant honor that ILASS – Americas bestow upon authors at its annual conference. The Marshall Award recognizes the best overall conference paper — based primarily on its significance to the field and strength of the technical content. The Simmons Award provides a $2,000 prize to the student who has made the best presentation — with an emphasis on clarity, delivery and visual aids; but also considers technical content and knowledge of the subject.
Decisions are based on individual nominations as well as a combined score from a jury composed of session chairs and experts in the field.
W. R. Marshall Award
The W.R. Marshall Award is named in honor of W. Robert Marshall, who had a 40-year career on the UW-Madison faculty, starting in 1947. He also served as Dean of the College of Engineering from 1971 to 1981. Bob Marshall was world renowned for his research in atomization and spray drying and he served as Director and President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He was thesis advisor to many well-known UW-Madison alumni in the field of sprays, such as William Ranz and Roger Tate. Roger was one of ILASS's founding fathers.
As Dean of the College of Engineering, he worked at strengthening the school’s international ties and developed programs to help women and minorities enter the field. As Director of the University Industry Research program, he saw the potential between academia and industry — and brought both together for collaborative research efforts.
Bob served as Director and President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and mentored ILASS’s own Roger Tate — one of the Institute’s founding fathers.

Harold C. Simmons Award
Harold C. Simmons, a model leader of relentless energy and desire, was the first chairperson of ILASS-Americas and an industry pioneer in spray nozzle design.
Hal spent most of working career at Parker Hannifin — entering as a staff engineer but eventually leading initiatives to develop fuel nozzles for a multitude of gas turbine engines, valves and engine control systems for jet engines, designing rocket engine controls, and fuel nozzles for supersonic jet engines. Upon retirement, Hal held 87 patents worldwide.
Once retired, he championed the formation of ILASS-Americas and served as the founding Chair at the first meeting in Madison in 1987. He worked tirelessly with other experts of spray technology to advance the organization and its mission. The participation of students in ILASS-Americas was a cornerstone of his professional ideals. This award recognizes these principles and is generously sponsored by Parker Hannifin.
